Certificates for courses of Teacher Training in art in grammar school

Course book for Teacher Training in art in grammar school

Course of study

The study programme is divided into two phases:

1. the two-term Basic Course and
2. the six-term Main Course.

The whole study is organized in three categories that are integrated and studied in parallel:

1. Aesthetic Practice (artistic work in the studios and technical-creative training in the study workshops)

2. Specific Science (art history/-theory/-psychology/-sociology/-philosophy)

3. Teaching Methodology (history and theory of teaching art, methods of artistic and creative working, methods of imparting art and everyday culture in class)

In addition to the studies two work experiences have to be done in school, one with an educational and one with a didactical focus, which each are accompanied by preparing and following seminars.

In the subject of Aesthetic Practice aims are formulated, knowledges and skills of appropriate media and creativity developed and creative behaviour trained that shall lead to broad productivity. In reference to the own practice and beyond that, forms of expression and techniques will be developed, that are relevant for teaching in school.

In Specific Science (aesthetics) you will be given an theory-based understanding of the way to handle art and the phenomenon of visual everyday culture. Furthermore self reliance and certainty in judging can be earned.

Art didactics shall give an insight into theories and methods of teaching art and the history of the subject and lead you to a sound attitude towards education. It especially deals with the aesthetic creativity of children and adolescents and wants to direct to an appreciation of other cultural forms of expression.

Basic Course

The Basic Course describes the first two semesters, in which you will meet your fellow students of Teacher Training and Fine Arts in base class. The Basic Course will be completed with a presentation of an own work. Beyond the work in the base class two more courses in Didactics and Specific Science are obligatory - as well as two introductory courses in workshops.

Main Course

In the Main Course (3rd to 8th semester) the students arrange their study programme independently, by choosing courses from the range of subjects (pursuant to study regulations) in all three categories and thereby decide on emphasis and order considering type of school.

The intention of the Main Course (4 semesters in studio, 1 semester teaching-related practice) can be described as reflecting artistic action: artistic action integrates aesthetic rationality and the awareness of methods, emotional and creative processes and procedures of craftsmanship. Thereby artistic action is imaging and education at the same time.

The Main Course also intends to develop creative didactical opportunities and decisions through the ability to act artistically. Therefore artistic working shapes and increases the own aesthetic experience and trains the ability to develop creative teaching procedures. So technical competency refers to artistic practice as well as to imparting processes.
